Famous People From Plymouth #1 – Michael Mackintosh Foot

Michael Foot was born on July 23rd 1913, in Plymouth, Devon, UK. He was a British Labour Party Politician who served as Labour Leader from 1980 to 1983 and an author. Michael Foot began his career as a newspaper editor and columnist. By 1974, he became secretary of state for employment in charge of complex and controversial trade-union legislation.

He later became the leader of the House of Commons. Between 1976 and 1980, he went from being the Labour Party’s deputy leader to the Party’s Chief. As a political writer, Michael Foot had a reputation for being a rebel of the left and advocated for state ownership of industries.

Born and bred in Plymouth, Sharron Davies is a former competitive swimmer representing the UK in the Olympics, European Championships, and Commonwealth Games. Sharron began her Swimming career at age 11. At age 18, she won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and went on to win a silver medal in the Olympics. She was British Champion on 20 occasions and broke 200 British swimming records.
